Accessibility

Accessibility statement.

A lot of the people this site is written for find standard websites hard work. That makes this statement more than a formality, so here is what has actually been done, what is still imperfect, and how to tell me when something gets in your way.

What this site aims for.

The target is WCAG 2.2 at level AA, which is the standard UK and EU rules point to. Most of the site meets it. Where it does not, it is listed below rather than left for you to discover.

What has been done.

  • Every colour pairing on the site has been measured rather than eyeballed. Body text meets or exceeds a 4.5 to 1 contrast ratio, and large text and interface elements meet 3 to 1.
  • Body text is set at 17px with generous line spacing, and never in a light weight.
  • The whole site works by keyboard. Focus is always visible, as a solid dark outline rather than a faint glow.
  • Buttons and links are at least 44px tall, so they are reachable with an unsteady hand or a thumb.
  • Headings run in order with no levels skipped, so screen reader navigation works.
  • Every image has a text alternative. Images that are purely decorative are hidden from screen readers rather than described pointlessly.
  • Every animation stops if your device is set to reduce motion. Nothing moves, flashes or auto-plays without you asking for it.
  • Nothing on the site relies on colour alone to make a point. Links are underlined as well as coloured.
  • Text can be enlarged to 200 per cent without anything overlapping or disappearing, and the page never scrolls sideways.

Known problems.

Two things fall short, and both are being worked on.

  • Any PDF added in future will not be accessible unless it is built that way. If you need something from a PDF in another format, ask and I will send it.
  • Content embedded from other companies, such as a map or a booking widget, is only as accessible as they make it. Where that gets in your way, there is always a phone number and an email address that will reach me instead.

If something here is a barrier.

Please let me know. Email amy@amyhutsoncounselling.co.uk or call 07767 745319, and describe what happened and what you were trying to do. You do not need technical language for this. I will reply within five working days, and if I cannot fix it quickly I will tell you how else to get what you needed.

If contacting me by phone or email is itself the problem, say which way of getting in touch would work better for you and I will use it.

How this was checked.

Contrast, heading structure, image dimensions and horizontal overflow were all tested automatically across every page at desktop and mobile widths, rather than sampled. Automated testing catches a good deal and not everything, which is why the invitation above is a real one.
