About

About Amy.

Welcome. I am a neurodivergent BACP accredited counsellor, supervisor and trainer working in Lewes, Brighton and online across the UK. Alongside humanistic psychotherapy I am trained in writing therapy and creative arts counselling, which means we do not have to depend on you finding the exact words for what is happening.

  • BACP accredited, member 374395
  • PG Dip Humanistic Psychotherapy, Brighton University
  • Certificate in Supervision, Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy
  • Brighton, Lewes, or online

How I work.

Humanistic psychotherapy is the foundation, which in plain terms means I am not going to arrive with a formula and apply it to you. The direction comes from you. My job is to be properly alongside you while you work out what is going on, and to be honest with you about what I notice.

Where talking is not the easiest route, we have others. Writing therapy and creative arts approaches let you arrive at something without having to perform a conversation to get there, and they often reach the material that words go around rather than through.

Nothing happens that you have not agreed to. If I suggest something and it is not for you, that is a complete answer.

What people tend to bring.

  • Anxiety, stress and burnout
  • Family patterns and self-esteem
  • Change, transition and trauma
  • Neurodivergence, at any point of recognition
  • Work that has stopped being survivable

More about counselling with me, or working creatively

Where I have worked.

Over my career I have worked as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer across NHS, educational and charitable organisations. That range is why organisational supervision is part of what I do rather than a sideline.

Healthcare.

Royal Sussex County Hospital. Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Service. Tiny Tickers.

Charities and not-for-profits.

RNIB. Refugee Radio. Conversations over Borders. INTERSOS. Manchester Refugee Support Network. Release Counselling & Therapy for Women.

Youth and education.

Roedean School. The Foyer.

Training and accountability.

PG Dip Humanistic Psychotherapy.

University of Brighton. The core training, and the frame everything else sits inside.

Certificate in Supervision.

Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy. What lets me supervise other practitioners as well as see clients.

Certificate in Person Centred Creative Arts.

Association for Person-Centred Creative Arts. Alongside writing therapy training, this is a helpful way of working for anyone creative or wants another perspective that can't be found from words alone.

PCE-CfD counselling training.

Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression, the model used in NHS Talking Therapies.

IFS trauma training.

Frank Anderson's Internal Family Systems Trauma Treatment Programme, a four-month intensive through PESI UK. It is where most of how I work with trauma comes from. Worth being precise: this is training in the model, not certification by the IFS Institute, which runs a separate pathway of its own.

Neurodiversity Uncovered: Enhancing Therapeutic Practice for ADHD, Autism, and Trauma CPD.

Continuing professional development in ADHD, autism and AuDHD, including how their traits overlap with and are mistaken for trauma.

BACP accredited, member 374395.

Accreditation is a separate step beyond membership, assessed against evidence of competent practice. I work to the BACP Ethical Framework and take my work to regular clinical supervision.

What organisations say.

“Amy Hutson has been a fantastic support for pupils and staff and all feedback has been positive with a strong focus from pupils on enabling self-sufficiency and independence in managing personal difficulties and challenges.”

Talia Keller, Head of School, Roedean School

“Amy Hutson provided mental health training to support Safeguarding and child protection personnel across the PEAS Zambia School Network. […] The child protection focal persons can now confidently spot mental health issues, create safe spaces and offer counselling support to our students.”

Ngosa Kulula, Safeguarding Officer, PEAS

The first step is a conversation.

Fifteen minutes on the telephone, free, and no obligation to book anything afterwards.

Or read what I have written first, if you would rather get a sense of how I think before you ring anyone.
